Heat the oil in a heavy bottom pan or pot to 350°F. (Alternatively tater tots can be baked in the oven on a foil lined baking sheet according to the instructions on the package.)
Add the tater tots to the oil in batches if needed and cook until golden brown and crispy, about 6 to 10 minutes. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon and lay out on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess grease. Season with salt to taste. Serve with ketchup if desired.
Notes
Pro Tip: Baking them in the oven if desired until crispy and golden brown will be less calories and less clean up but will require more time to cook.
