Ingredients

  • 4 tsp Extra-virgin olive oil use as needed
  • 1 Onion sliced thin
  • 1 cup Mushrooms sliced
  • 1 pound Ground turkey
  • 2 tbsp Steak seasoning Montreal steak seasoning or equivalent
  • 1/2 tsp Garlic powder
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 oz Cheddar cheese sliced
  • 4 oz Swiss cheese sliced
  • 8 slices Rye bread
  • 4 Pickles sliced into rounds
  • 4 tbsp Ketchup or more if desired

Instructions

  • Preheat a non-stick pan over low-medium heat.
  • Add in a little of the oil and the onions. Let the onions cook, stirring occasionally until they become soft and golden brown (add a little oil at a time as needed throughout cooking if the pan starts to look dry). Once golden brown, add in the mushrooms and sauté until soft. Remove from the pan and set aside.
  • In the meantime, mix together the ground beef, steak seasoning, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper, and form into oblong patties to fit the shape of the bread.
  • Heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Cook the burgers on both sides to your desired doneness (see below) using a thermometer. Then remove from the pan and set aside. Do not discard the grease from the burgers.
  • Place a slice of both cheeses on a slice of bread, layer with the burger, mushrooms, onions, remaining cheeses, and the other slice of bread on top.
  • In a non-stick pan over medium heat, using the reserved grease from the burgers, cover with a lid and cook the sandwich on both sides until golden brown while melting the cheese (if making multiple sandwiches and you need more oil, use a few teaspoons from the French fries).
  • Cut in half and serve with pickles and ketchup.
