Ingredients
For the honey balls
- 1/4 cup Water lukewarm
- 1/2 TBSP Granulated sugar
- 3/4 tsp Active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup Milk lukewarm
- 3/4 cup All-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp Salt
- 1 TBSP Extra-virgin olive oil
- 3 cups Vegetable oil or high smoking point oil of choice
Honey coating
- 1/4 cup Honey use more as needed
- 1/2 tsp Ground cinnamon
- 2 TBSP Walnuts chopped small
Milk
- 16 oz Milk cold
Instructions
- Make the dough: In a bowl add the water, sugar, and yeast. Stir with a whisk until the yeast dissolves completely, then let sit for 5 minutes. Using an electric mixer, add the milk, flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture and beat at high speed (for about 2 minutes) until the mixture becomes a smooth batter. (You could also use a hand whisk. Whisk until the mixture has no lumps).
- Cover the bowl with some plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm place for at least 1 hour to rise.
- Add the vegetable oil to a pot. Heat the oil on medium heat to 320°F (160°C).
- Dip a tablespoon in the oil, and shake it a bit to remove any excess. Using the spoon, scoop a dough ball and place it in the hot oil. Repeat this procedure in batches if needed so as to not overcrowd the oil. (You should dip the spoon in the oil and shake it off every time so that the batter doesn’t stick to it.)
- While the honey balls are being fried, use a slotted spoon to turn them on all sides, until golden brown.
- When done, place the honey balls on paper towels to remove the excess oil.
- Drizzle the honey balls with honey and sprinkle with cinnamon and chopped walnuts. Use honey as needed to coat well but not excessively.
- Portion and enjoy with milk.
