French Toast Sticks

Ingredients

  • 1/2 loaf Challah bread Cut into about 3 inch long by 1 inch wide sticks, about 4 per portion (or bread of your choice)
  • 9 oz Sausage links
  • 2 Eggs beaten
  • 1/4 cup Milk
  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar
  • pinch Ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 2 tsp Ground cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp Butter as needed
  • 2 tsp Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 4 tbsp Maple syrup or more if desired
  • 1 cup Blackberries (Check the Fruit guide to substitute seasonal fruits)
  • Powdered sugar sifted for garnish

Instructions

  • Cut the bread into 3 inch long by 1 inch wide sticks.
  • For the sausage: cook in a 400 degree oven to an internal temperature of 155 degrees using a thermometer. 
  • Mix the beaten egg, milk, sugar, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon in a shallow bowl. Dip the bread in turning to coat all sides evenly until the sticks are moistened but not soggy. Cook in the pan or griddle until golden brown on all sides.
  • Preheat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium low heat. Lightly grease the pan with butter and oil as needed.
  • Serve the French toast with syrup, sausage, and blackberries. Garnish with sifted powdered sugar.
