Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place the sausage on a foil-lined baking sheet. Cook in the oven to an internal temperature of 160°F using a thermometer, turning over once about halfway through cooking.
In a sauté pan over medium heat, brown the ground beef while breaking it into smaller pieces with a spatula. Add the chili powder, cumin, paprika, tomato, and broth. Season with salt and pepper, simmer for about 15 minutes while occasionally stirring. Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.
Partially slice the roll halfway thru but not all the way. Scoop out the inside of the bread to create a pocket.
Place the sausage on the roll, top with chili, cheese, and onion.
