In a pot of boiling salted water, cook the pasta according to the directions on the package. Drain well.
In a nonstick pan on medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up into smaller pieces as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
In a baking dish mix together the pasta, half of the sauce, and ground beef. Top with more sauce and then mozzarella; bake in the oven until the cheese is melted, (about 10 to 15 minutes).
Let sit for 5 to 10 minutes before portioning, ladle more sauce if desired, serve with crusty bread, garnish with basil.
